The disappearance of Charles “Gary” Lightfoot, 82, and his wife, Linda Eppers Lightfoot, 81, captured widespread concern in Texas after the couple did not return home from a Thanksgiving visit with family. They were last seen on November 27 leaving Panhandle, Texas, for what should have been a familiar drive back to Lubbock.

When they did not arrive as expected, relatives contacted authorities, leading to a Silver Alert and a coordinated effort between multiple agencies to locate them. Investigators worked to trace the couple’s movements by identifying their silver Toyota Camry through license plate readers, which detected the vehicle near Groom, Texas, and later close to Santa Rosa, New Mexico.

These sightings suggested travel but did not provide answers about their direction or condition. Without cell phones or tracking devices, officials had limited ability to communicate with them or pinpoint their location, which increased urgency as hours passed. Authorities ultimately located the couple in Quay County, New Mexico. Early findings indicated no evidence of foul play, and officials said the exact circumstances would be determined through a medical review.

Local leaders expressed gratitude to the agencies and community members who supported the search and offered messages of sympathy to the family. Gary Lightfoot was widely respected for his long service in law enforcement, working in several Texas departments and serving as Police Chief of Littlefield from 1993 to 2003. The couple is remembered for their dedication to each other and their community, and their loss has been met with heartfelt condolences.
