The cabin crew have explained the brutal decision

It is a scenario every traveler fears, though usually only in their imagination: an entire commercial flight cancelled, hundreds of passengers stranded overnight, and an airline scrambling to manage a logistical nightmare—all because a toddler refused to buckle up.

That exact scenario played out aboard a Porter Airlines redeye flight bound for Toronto Pearson International Airport from Victoria International Airport in British Columbia. The aircraft, a 132-seat jet packed with late-night travelers, had already pushed back from the gate and was taxiing down the runway when trouble began inside the cabin.

According to statements released by the airline, a young child was standing in their assigned seat and steadfastly refusing to fasten their seatbelt. Despite repeated attempts by both the accompanying parent and the flight crew to resolve the issue, the toddler would not comply.

Federal aviation safety regulations strictly prohibit an aircraft from taking off if passengers are not properly secured. Faced with an unresolvable safety violation, the captain made the call to turn the plane around and return to the terminal.

What passengers hoped would be a quick administrative delay soon spiraled into a hours-long ordeal.

“It Took Forever”
Passenger Hillary Hertzberg recalled how tension built inside the cabin as the minutes ticked away.

“It took forever,” Hertzberg told CBC News, explaining that the situation dragged on for nearly an hour while crew members and ground staff worked to resolve the standoff. “The kid eventually got off the plane at 11:30 [p.m.], so we had been on the flight for about almost an hour at that point.”

Removing the parent and child was only the first step. Ground crews then had to navigate the tedious process of identifying and offloading their checked baggage, alongside completing required safety paperwork.

By the time the family was off the aircraft, time had officially run out. Victoria International Airport enforces a strict airfield closure at 12:30 a.m., and the delay had pushed the flight past its departure window.

Rather than flying across the country, all 132 passengers were forced to disembark and find overnight accommodations.

“We apologize for the effect this had on other passengers, who were able to depart on a flight the following day,” Porter spokesperson Brad Cicero said in an official statement addressing the cancellation.

Fear vs. Tantrum: Passengers Divided over the Child’s Behavior
While the cancellation sparked immediate frustration, travelers onboard walked away with starkly different perspectives on what actually happened inside the cabin.

Passenger Aryeh Kozuch, a 26-year-old traveler from Toronto, admitted that while annoyance was palpable throughout the cabin, he rejected the narrative that the toddler was simply throwing a wild tantrum.

“I’m not gonna lie, I never even considered the idea that it was gonna be an unruly toddler,” Kozuch told The Canadian Press. “I thought it was an unruly adult.”

From his seat, Kozuch observed a child paralyzed by fear rather than acting out out of defiance.

“They just kept hiding under their seat. If they got forced into being strapped in, they just kind of slid out underneath,” Kozuch explained. “This was a child that was in a tube with 150 people… They’re obviously terrified, and their response was to try and hide under the seat in front of them. That’s so different than a kid running around and screaming.”

The Internet Weighs In: Parental Responsibility Under Fire
When details of the incident hit social media, public debate quickly shifted away from the frightened child and focused squarely on the parent’s handling of the crisis.

Many online commentators argued that when it comes to aviation safety, parental compromise isn’t an option.

“Actually, that’s exactly what I’d expect the parents to do,” one user commented on Reddit, responding to suggestions that forcing a child into a seatbelt in public was unreasonable. “There are very few times where things are non-optional, and this is one of them.”

Others focused on the sheer length of the delay before the family was escorted off the aircraft, arguing that the parent should have voluntarily stepped off long before an entire plane load of people lost their flight.

“About 10-15 mins I’d also expect the parents to leave the airplane instead of inconveniencing every other passenger on the flight,” wrote another observer. “Instead, it took an hour… This is completely on [the parents] and their selfish behavior.”

Another commenter echoed similar sentiments: “Obviously – it’s the parents’ fault for dragging their toddler on a red eye and then not parenting them.”

Porter Airlines has issued formal apologies to all affected travelers for the overnight disruption, though the carrier has not publicly clarified whether passengers will receive financial compensation for unexpected hotel or travel expenses incurred by the cancellation.
