Striped Nails? Here’s What Your Body Might Be Telling You

Noticing vertical or horizontal lines on your nails? These stripes may be more than just a cosmetic concern—they could signal underlying health or nutrition issues.

Common causes include deficiencies in essential nutrients like zinc, vitamin B, or iron. In some cases, the lines may result from dehydration, aging, or stress. Medical conditions such as thyroid imbalances or anemia can also contribute.

Vertical lines (also called longitudinal ridges) often appear naturally with age, while horizontal lines (Beau’s lines) can indicate a disruption in nail growth due to illness or malnutrition.

To help prevent these nail changes:

Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals
Stay well-hydrated
Manage stress levels
If you notice sudden or severe changes in your nails, it’s best to consult a healthcare provider. Striped nails may be a subtle but important clue about your overall health.
